European Elections 2009 - Letter to Beppe Severgnini, Italians

know the forum of the Corriere della Sera Italians managed by the journalist Beppe Severgnini ? It 'a kind of meeting point for Italians abroad, but not limited to, where to discuss politics, current events, society, media and so on. In the past I read assiduously letters and discussions which followed, and I've written 5 times, being published 4 (found my letters, if you are interested, here , here, here and here ). Recently

Severgnini said that is not going to vote in European elections on 6 and 7 June because disappointed with the nominations. His decision, released on Italians and ran, has sparked a bit '(not too much, actually) of wriggling , which even I - as a convinced European - I meant mine. For this reason, yesterday, Sunday, May 24, I wrote a letter to Italians who copied it below. Unfortunately, the limited number of characters (2,000) did not allow me to say everything I wanted, but better than nothing, I hope to have been effective. The letter this morning, May 25, has not been published (but the Italians on Monday is dedicated to the sport). We'll see.

Here is the text of the letter
Dear Beppe, I am Fred, I'm 26 years old and I'm writing from Barcelona.
I'm reading with interest the debate about the EU elections as a result of your decision not to vote. As secretary general of the Catalan section of JEF (Young European Federalists www.jef.eu - www.jefcatalunya.com) and convinced European, I must speak my mind on the matter. Beppe, respect your decision not to vote, but do not share . Not voting means not want to decide on the many issues on which the EU parliament will be asked to decide in the next 5 years. True, the EP has the same powers of a national parliament, but a lot of legislation that is then adopted by the Member States takes place in Brussels and Strasbourg: really do not want to have a say on this? In this regard, I invite you to see a nice video on youtube, "5 friends 4 Europe" , filmed by friends of JEF France. I know your main objection is: I'm not going to vote because most of the candidates are old names of the people without any knowledge or policy of the EU institutions. I concur, in part, your thoughts and your disappointment, but not all candidates are well, come on! Certainly, within the lists there are men and women who deserve our vote and we will worthily represent the EP. And since the electoral law can apply preferences, it is up to us inform us about the candidates that we believe best suited to the role of the European Parliament. Internet, in this, we can give a big hand, especially us Italians abroad. Also, do not vote politically it would not help anything to the contrary, a conscious vote can really change things . Tomorrow, May 25, all local sections of JEF mobilize a 'street action' to explain when, how and especially WHY ' vote. Probably meet someone in Milan stopped to talk with them, maybe I will convince you to VISIT to the polls to vote.
